 A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman7:00 PM at The Parish Art Museum: 25 Job's Lane · Southampton, New York 11968 This is an exploration of exile, memory, longing and democracy, through the eyes of Ariel Dorfman, acclaimed author of numerous works of fiction, plays (most famously Death and the Maiden). Born in Argentina, but raised in New York until his family was exiled to Chile during the 1950s Red Scare, Dorfman became Cultural Adviser to the Chief of Staff of Chile’s socialist president, Salvador Allende. When the democratically elected government was toppled in the military coup of 1973, Dorfman was among a handful of Allende’s inner circle to survive. Years later, he was told that he was spared because “someone had to live to tell the story”. Filmed in Chile, Canada and U.S. Running time: 1 hr 32 min. Spanish and English with Subtitles. Fifty-two-year-old Juan is laid off when the gas station where he has worked for the last 20 years is sold. His luck turns in a most unexpected way when an elderly widow with little money gives Juan her late husband’s dog, as payment for repairing her car. The dog is a pure breed Dogo Argentino, a potential dog show winner who may hold the key to Juan’s future in his paw. Directed by: Carlos Sorín. Filmed in Argentina. Running time: 1 hr 36 min. When the children learn that Malú’s mother is planning to leave Cuba, they decide to travel to the other side of the island to find Malú’s father and persuade him against signing the forms that would allow her to be taken away from Cuba. En una historia tipo “Romeo y Julieta”, la amistad entre dos niños es amenazada por la diferencia entre sus padres. Malú proviene de la clase alta y su madre soltera ni quiere que juegue con Jorgito, ya que ella piensa que es vulgar y común. La madre de Jorge es una Socialista pobre orgullosa de su clase social, ella también pone restricciones a su hijo. As Alex begins to explore her sexuality, her mother invites friends from Buenos Aires, along with their 16-year-old son Álvaro, to come for a visit at their house on the gorgeous Uruguayan shore. Alex is immediately attracted to the young man, which adds yet another level of complexity to her personal search for identity forcing both families to face their worst fears. Director: Lucia Puenzo Para cualquier persona, la adolescencia significa el confrontar numerosas alternativas y decisiones de la vida, pero raramente una tan monumental como la que enfrenta el quinceañero Alex quien ha nacido con ambigüedad genital.
